International Women’s Day Rally and March to be held in Sequim
The Stop the Checkpoints committee of the North Olympic Peninsula has announced an International Women’s Day rally and march to be held on Saturday, March 7, in Sequim. The rally begins at 1:30 pm at the intersection of Washington Street and Sequim Avenue, followed by a march at 2:30 pm. The focus of the event is the link between women’s rights, immigrant rights, civil liberties, border militarization, and the current economic crisis.
“International Women’s Day has been celebrated around the world for nearly 100 years to demand female equality in the home, at the workplace, and in the community,” says rally organizer Susan Dorazio of Port Townsend. “This year, it’s important to acknowledge the growing pressures on women, especially immigrant women, due to increased job insecurity and social service cutbacks, compounded by the climate of fear that border militarization has created. On March 7, we will be honoring women’s
strength and resourcefulness under very difficult circumstances.”
“Immigrant families are being torn apart,” says Dorazio, “and women are leading the fight to keep families together and to defend civil liberties in the face of intensified Border Patrol harassment and detentions.”
Event endorsers include: ACLU of Washington, Clallam County Green Party, Code Pink-Washington, Community to Community-Bellingham, Freedom Socialist Party-WA, Olympic Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship, Port Townsend Peace Movement, Radical Women – Port Angeles & Seattle Chapters, and Socialist Party Women’s Commission.
